schist #
schist will be a search engine of links which are collected, categorized, and annotated by people, for the benefit of those close to them and the greater public. In a world full of misinformation, bigotry, AI slop, SEO cruft, cash grabs, and general nonsense, schist's drive is to make the trustworthy sources findable by putting personal recommendations first.
At the time of writing, schist is just nearing a minimum-viable-product state. Several core parts of its design are missing, there are known and low-hanging denial-of-service vectors, and its author does not yet recommend it for daily or real-world usage. It has been published in this state to allow anyone to make contributions (see the contributing section) and in the hope of increasing its bus factor. You can browse the issues for an idea of what work is planned next.
installation #
In brief, to set up a schist instance, you will need to build schist using Rust and Cargo, configure a PostgreSQL server and an nginx server, and make your own arrangements for schist to be run automatically. schist will only run on Unixes. More detailed instructions can be found in the installation document.
contributing #
The schist project welcomes contributions of all kinds—not just code changes—and maintains a list of all those who have made contributions.
Note that contributions which modify the git repository (for example, changes to code, documentation, or translations) become part of schist and take on its license, the AGPL.
LLMs exacerbate the difficulty of finding reliable information (along with furthering labor arbitrage, and being mired in numerous other issues). As such, they are in direct opposition to schist's philosophy. Do not attempt to submit LLM output (or “AI generated content”) as contributions to schist of any kind.
The schist project has not yet adopted a code of conduct—this is considered an issue and will be fixed in the near future. In the meantime, the position of the schist project is this:
- Trans rights. 🏳️⚧️
- Black lives matter.
- Be excellent to each other.
